Newport Dunes General Manager

Reporting to the president and CEO, you will be the leader at Newport Dunes Resort and Marina. Are you ready to make a difference and lead a waterfront resort's success? We are looking for someone who can direct a talented team of managers and supervisors to lead our RV park, special events, food & beverage and marina operations. You will drive increasing levels of customer and employee satisfaction while improving the efficiency of our team members and operations.

 

The ideal candidate will have effective leadership and entrepreneurial skills, experience managing properties that host large scale (1000+ person) events, know his or her way around complex business deals and financials, be a skilled problem solver and strategic thinker, effectively supervise a large group of direct reports, thoroughly understand the Southern California and Newport Beach hospitality industry and have a track record of effective overall management of resort properties.

 

On any given day, you'll be doing one or all of these things:

  • Seek and enter into, or reject, high-grossing or multi-year event and/or food and beverage business deals after thorough analysis of proposed contracts, projected revenue, staffing needs, infrastructure, insurance, permits and licensing and all other factors relevant to the deal proposed. Approximately 60 percent of your time will be spent doing this.
  • Collaborate with relevant department managers to develop and implement property-wide hospitality, customer relations and reputation management processes.
  • Ensure compliance and quality control such that the property and all its staff operate efficiently, ethically and in accordance with all applicable legal requirements, regulatory standards and organizational policies and procedures.
  • Enforce safety procedures and programs.
  • Lead all departments to operate efficiently.
  • Oversee food and beverage department, the hosting and managing of special events and ensuring excellent service levels.
  • Oversee major capital improvement projects and repairs.
  • Provide general oversight to all aspects of the property's financials including cash, inventory, revenue, expenses and budget and/or cost variances.
  • Manage all supervisory aspects related to your direct reports including approving time off work, coaching, training, developing and mentoring as well as promptly addressing performance problems.
  • Guide your department managers in creating and implementing annual departmental business plans and assisting them to prepare their annual budget proposals.
  • Approve unbudgeted expenses.
  • Supervise advertising, marketing, community relations and reputation management initiatives.
  • Spearhead community and industry relations.
  • Keep learning new things to be the best general manager you can be.

 

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in hospitality, business administration, or equivalent.
  • Minimum 7 years' recent experience leading convention centers, regional hotel general management with large-scale, complex event and F&B operations, or general management of amusement parks with large-scale event and F&B operations.
  • Minimum 5 years' experience directly analyzing all legal, financial, insurance, licensing and permits, staffing, etc. involved in contracts for large-scale and/or long-term event or F&B business deals.
  • Proven savvy negotiating contracts in general and business law in particular
  • Minimum 5 years planning, budgeting, implementing and managing large-scale capital improvement projects.
  • Minimum 5 years' experience managing five or more direct reports.

 

Desired Education and Experience:

  • Law degree or master's degree in hospitality, business administration or similar
  • Prior legal, finance or operations-management experience in scalable start-up companies that eventually received VC funding, 7-figure business loans and/or were sold as envisioned when the company was founded, or went public.
  • Prior experience successfully managing marinas or shoreline-based resort, hospitality and/or food & beverage businesses.

 

Work Environment

You'll work primarily in an office environment with some outdoor exposure. Occasionally you be outdoors to go from your office to other locations on the property and off.
