Summary of Job

 

The Director of Tennis is responsible for all aspects of management, administration, and provision of tennis activities and maintenance of the tennis courts and racquet club at Bentwater Yacht and Country Club. The Director will follow the overall goals and objectives established by the General Manager. The Director will be considered the subject matter expert in the technical aspects of administration, management, and provision of tennis activities and maintenance.

 

 

Experience and Education:

  • Must possess an undergraduate or higher degree from an accredited college, with major course work in racquet club or country club administration, parks and recreation administration, business administration or in another closely related field plus 4 years of experience in racquet club administration.
  • A minimum of 8 years of experience in racquet club administration may be substituted for degree.
  • Current USPTA/USPTR Card preferred
  • CPR certification required within 90 days of employment
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, preferred
  • Ability to demonstrate strong public relations and communications skills.
  • Ability to work under minimum supervision and assume responsibility for initiative and completion of work.

 

 

Essential Tasks:

 

General Duties

  • Supervise all tennis play
  • Supervise proper charging of court fees and other privilege fees
  • Supervise the rental of club equipment and the maintenance thereof.
  • Provide competent tennis instruction for all groups and levels of players.
  • Supervise the operation of a player handicapping and rating system such as Tencap or the National Tennis Rating Program at such times and to the extent needed.
  • Supervise competent personnel such as assistant professionals, shop personnel, maintenance staff, etc, in the performance of their duties.
  • Enforce all the club's rules and regulations governing the use of the club, its equipment and other property.
  • Operate and maintain a reputable pro shop staffed with competent personnel and featuring quality merchandise and services.
  • Maintain close relationships with the other club professionals
  • Devote a reasonable number of hours to playing tennis with members regardless of their tennis excellence; such play is not to be considered a playing lesson.
  • Plan tennis evenings to promote tennis and fellowship in the club. Prepare tennis clinics, films, fun playing events or tennis education programs, etc, for such evenings. Enthusiastically promote tennis.
  • Represent the club in professional tennis activities, including meetings of the national and/or local division of USPTA and in tournaments such as Pro-Ams with members, as well as state or national tennis events as time will permit, but only with the approval of the General Manager.

 

Tournaments

  • Meet with the Tournament Committee Chairperson and Event chairperson for the purpose of preparing and planning the details of tennis events in writing.
  • Secure adequate support personnel for various aspects of tournament events (publicity, umpires, etc.).
  • Coordinate match schedules.
  • Ensure all facilities are ready for events.
  • Secure draw sheets, scorecards and other such items necessary for respective tournaments.
  • Prepare and distribute event information sheets (entry blanks) for participants.
  • Coordinate with the club on the use of other departmental amenities by participants (food, etc.).
  • Be available for rules decisions and other necessary coordination throughout the event.
  • Prepare post-tournament reports with details of the events.

 

 

Programs

  • Ensure programs are in place at the club to service the entire membership (juniors, adults, seniors, etc.).
  • Organize periodic special events at the club in an effort to attract/hold members' tennis interests.
  • Provide beginning through advanced instruction to enhance broad-based member participation.
  • Provide educational opportunities for the entire membership so that they can understand and enjoy tennis.
  • Provide guidance to the Tennis Committee.
  • Help in the preparation of an annual calendar of tennis activities for the club.
  • Prepare annual budget for the responsible operation of the tennis facilities.

 

Maintenance

  • Inspect the courts/facilities on a daily basis prior to the start of play and ascertain that all necessary maintenance has been performed.
  • Be certain that necessary personnel for the maintenance and upkeep of the club are aware of any maintenance issues that need attention.
  • Make certain that the necessary equipment for the maintenance and upkeep of the club is on hand and properly maintained.
  • Keep General Manager informed on the status of the club and equipment for the purpose of budgeting for replacement and repair items.
  • Ascertain that all areas of the tennis facility are neat and clean at all times.

 

Tennis Pro Shop Operations

  • Keep pro shop and office in clean and presentable condition.
  • Maintain hours of operation of the pro shop agreed upon by management.
  • Maintain tennis merchandise at a reasonable level commensurate with members' needs.
  • Provide necessary coordination with the club accounting system to assure a smooth billing operation.
